Padar Island had just become an iconic destination in the Komodo National Park about four years ago. Previously, this island was not as popular as Rinca Island and Komodo Islands. There are a few Komodo Dragons on this island, but you don't need to worry because the Komodo Dragon's location is at the northern end of the island and far from where the tourist is gathering and climbing. The location of the Komodo dragon is also closely guarded by patrols from the Komodo National Park for 24 hours.
So what makes Padar Island one of the most iconic tourist destinations in Komodo Island? First is the beauty of the long stretches of beaches with fine white sand and crystal-clear water. There are six beaches on Padar Island, but there's only one that is allowed to be accessed by the public. When you get to the peak of the island, then you will witness the most breathtaking view of the entire Komodo National Park.
Padar Island also has its own mystery and controversy. A number of residents living in Komodo village once tell a tale that the island is actually has a rich gold ore content. Because of this, the island also once disputed by several private companies that wanted to exploit the island of Padar in an illegal way, by tried to build a hotel under the name of tourism and conservation. The validity of that story still remains a mystery, but some local residents in Kampung Komodo and other surrounding villages hold their belief in the story.
HOW DO YOU GET TO PADAR ISLAND ?
The only way to get to Padar Island is by boat. The easiest access is through the city of Labuan Bajo. There are many ways to get to Labuan Bajo, the easiest and fastest way is by air. Several flights to and from Labuan Bajo can be reached via Jakarta, Bali, Lombok, Surabaya, Makassar, and Kupang. You may check the domestic flights here.
HOW LONG IS PADAR ISLAND HIKE ?
Trekking to the top of Padar Island will take about 30 minutes to 1 hour, depending on the condition of your physical body strength. Take a few breaks if you feel tired because the sun in the Komodo national park is very hot. Prepare sunscreen, trekking sandals or trekking shoes, hats, sunglasses and bring bottled drinking water provided by our Komodo boat crew.
HOW HIGH IS PADAR ISLAND ?
Approximately 240 meters above sea level and more than 750 stairs to climb. You can see the whole area of Komodo National Park and also Komodo Island in the distance.
ARE THERE KOMODO DRAGONS ON PADAR ISLAND ?
Yes, there are Komodo Dragons on Padar Island but there are very few and located in the far north of the island of Padar, which is inaccessible by humans. That area is guarded 24 hours by professional rangers from the Komodo National Park.
CAN YOU STAY AT PADAR ISLAND ?
No. The Komodo National Park officials forbid humans from staying overnight or camping on the island of Padar. There are still dragons on the island of Padar. The only way to stay at Padar Island is by renting a liveaboard Komodo boat. The boat will anchor on the beach.
